Uma Couchman is a 14-year-old rising 9th grader at Ethical Culture Fieldston School in the Bronx. She lives in New York City and has been coming to the Hamptons every summer since she was 2 years old. She has a younger sister and a dog. She has written a lot of creative fiction in the past and also has experience making websites.

Speaking about why she likes creative writing, she said, “I like telling the stories. It is part of why journalism is interesting to me because you’re telling stories, true stories. Journalists are story-tellers, and ever since I was young I loved reading fantasies, and now I’m more interested in historical fiction because it’s closer to the truth.”

Her hobbies include dancing, reading, baking, and swimming. When it comes to reading, she likes reading historical fiction, and her favorite book is "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen. Her interests include  politics and the arts, particularly international diplomacy and affairs, as well as theater. When it comes to school, her favorite subject is history, specifically World War II  and the Holocaust.
