This curated selection of outings, classes, and activities for older adults on the South Fork is really just a taste of what’s out there. Museums, theaters, libraries, and town facilities are cultural hubs for all things entertainment, informational, and educational.

 

Fixed in Time and Space

For anyone fascinated by old maps, the latest exhibit at the whaling museum, “Fixed in Time and Space: Maps of Sag Harbor, 1796 to 1921,” promises to be interesting. The museum is open Thursdays through Mondays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; admission is $8 for adults and $6 for senior citizens and students.

 

Senior Lunch Club

There is such a thing as a free lunch! The monthly Southampton Senior Services Lunch Club is open to anyone over 60. It’s free to attend, but advance sign-up is required since walk-in seating is not guaranteed.

 

Walking Tour:
Old Southampton Burying Ground

The library’s local history librarian will offer a free walking tour of the Old Southampton Burial Ground to share the history of the property and those who are buried there. Organizers advise wearing comfortable sneakers and ask that guests be respectful of driveways and nearby residents when parking.

 

Friday Classic Film:
“The French Connection”

In this 1971 classic featuring an iconic car-chase scene, two detectives, played by Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider, pursue a French heroin smuggler. The film is rated R and runs 1 hour and 44 minutes. Sign-up is online via the library’s event calendar.

 

The Met Live in HD at Guild Hall

“Salome,” Saturday, May 17, 1 to 3:30 p.m.

The Metropolitan Opera will stage the classic one-act tragedy “Salome” and the “effervescent” comedy “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” and offer live broadcast to audiences in cinemas and performing arts venues like Guild Hall. The cast of each opera is an assemblage of talent from around the world. Drinks and food from Harbor Market will be on sale. Tickets start at $30 with discounts for members.

 

Red Garden Walk: Art, Design, and Nature

Geoffrey Blatt, a docent, will lead a guided walk through the reserve’s Red Garden, which was the first garden planned and designed by the late founder and textile artist Jack Lenor Larsen. It is often regarded as the “epicenter” of the 16-acre sculpture garden. LongHouse members get free admission; for nonmembers, tickets are $20. Advance registration is required at longhouse.org.

 

Author Talk: “No Cloak, No Dagger” by Lester Paldy

Lester Paldy, an author and distinguished professor at Stony Brook University, will give a talk and sign copies of his recent memoir, which recounts his experience of being recruited by the C.I.A. in 1988 for a “trial run” that extended into a 25-year assignment. “Bob and Jean: A Love Story”

This new play by Robert Schenkkan, who has been nominated for Pulitzer, Tony, and Emmy awards for his prior work, makes its world premiere at Bay Street. The World War II-era storyline has been described as “stirring and romantic.” Tickets start at $49.99.

 

Coffee and Adult Coloring

Guests can spend a summer afternoon coloring and socializing over coffee with Rogers Memorial’s reference librarian, who will provide a list of trending book recommendations to discuss and pass along. Ladies’ Village Improvement Society Annual Fair

The L.V.I.S. promises this year’s fair will be “bigger than ever.” Attractions will include food trucks, a carousel, vintage vendors, a silent auction, mystery gift booth, and more. Proceeds support the L.V.I.S. commitments in the East Hampton community, such as beautification and student scholarships.
