A wake for Joseph DeCristofaro of East Hampton will be held today from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home here. A graveside service is planned for Friday at 11 a.m. at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery on Cedar Street.

Mr. DeCristofaro, a World War II veteran who was active in the East Hampton Fire Department for 67 years and was named its first honorary chief in 2022, died on Monday at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. He was 98.

Donations in his name have been suggested to the fire department, 1 Cedar Street, East Hampton 11937. An obituary will appear in a future issue.

Recalling Great Sacrifice and ‘Simple Things’

The sacrifice of “those who paid so terrible a price to ensure that freedom would be our legacy” was underlined again and again during Memorial Day observances in East Hampton. “If you want to honor their memory, then do the things they can’t,” said retired Marine Major Conlon Carabine. “Care for your family, care for yourself, care for your community, and try not to take the simple things in life for granted.”
