An Emergency Preparedeness Night for All

Thu, 06/12/2025 - 14:11

Residents concerned about disaster preparedness due to recent cuts to both the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration may have some of those concerns eased at an emergency preparedness night hosted by East Hampton Town on Monday evening at 6:30.

The Town Hall event will provide residents with information to help them prepare for a wide range of emergencies and will include presentations from the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services, the American Red Cross, and East Hampton Town officials.

“I think about the parent trying to figure out where to go with their kids during an evacuation, or the senior who needs medication packed in a go bag,” said Town Supervisor Kathee Burke-Gonzalez, in a release about the program. “Emergency preparedness is not just a checklist. It’s about making sure every person in our community has the resources they need to stay safe, knows where to find reliable information, and feels supported when a crisis happens.”

Participants will learn how to identify their evacuation zone, how to locate open shelters, what to include in a household emergency kit or “go bag,” and how Smart911 and Suffolk Alert can help first responders in an emergency, among other topics.

“East Hampton faces a range of risks,” said Councilman Tom Flight, in the release. “We want people to know their zones, know their shelters, and know what resources are available. A little preparation today can make a big difference when the unexpected happens.”

Attendees will also learn about the county’s emergency supply stockpile, and pet-friendly shelters.

The event will be filmed by LTV, East Hampton’s local public access television station, and posted to its YouTube channel.

Time to Strip, Dip, Freeze

Polar plunges at Main Beach in East Hampton and Beach Lane in Wainscott on New Year’s Day accomplish many things: bracing and exhilarating starts to the year, the company of many hundreds of friends and fellow townspeople, and a chance to secure bragging rights that extend well into 2026. But most important, each serves as a critical fund-raiser for food pantries.

Support Where It’s Most Needed

Soon after moving to Water Mill with her family in 2015, Marit Molin became aware of a largely unacknowledged population underpinning the complicated Hamptons economy. That led her to create Hamptons Community Outreach, which is dedicated to meeting basic critical needs to help break cycles of poverty.

This etching by Mary Nimmo Moran shows what was likely the view from her home across Town Pond, with the Gardiner Mill in the background, a favorite landscape for her.
