The Politicians Are Coming

Wed, 07/27/2022 - 18:27

Going somewhere Thursday? You may want to plan your route carefully. Southampton Town police are warning people to expect "road closures and heavy traffic" on "Route 27 and County Road 39 during the afternoon and evening rush hour," and the reason for those delays could be a visit from Vice President Kamala Harris, one of several big-name politicians heading to the South Fork in the coming days.

The vice president is expected to attend a fund-raiser in Water Mill, according to 27East.com, which reported Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman saying, "We’re providing security, and at the same time, we’re not permitted to talk about it for national security reasons."

On Saturday, Representative Adam Schiff of California will be a special guest at a fund-raiser for six Democratic representatives from 4 to 6 p.m. in Wainscott.

The fund-raiser will be hosted by former Representatives Tim Bishop of New York's First Congressional District and Steve Israel of New York's Second and Third Districts, and former Lt. Gov. Richard Ravitch and his wife, Kathy Doyle.

Mr. Schiff, a pointed critic of former President Trump and a member of the U.S. House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol, has drawn the sustained ire of the former president, dating to Mr. Trump's first impeachment trial.

The event is to benefit the re-election campaigns of the "Frontline Democrats" Representatives Cindy Axne of Iowa, Matt Cartwright of Pennsylvania, Jared Golden of Maine, Dan Kildee and Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, and Tom Malinowski of New Jersey. Frontline is the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's program to ensure incumbent Democratic members of Congress from the most competitive seats have the resources and information needed for effective re-election campaigns.

Also in Wainscott, Alison Esposito, the Republican Party's candidate for lieutenant governor of New York, will be a featured guest at the East Hampton Town Republican Committee's July Summer Cocktails fund-raiser on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Clubhouse. State Senator Anthony Palumbo and Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy will also attend.

Owl's Death Prompts Call for Bird-Friendly Building

Window strikes kill up to a billion birds annually and rank up there with cats and habitat destruction as the leading causes of recent steep declines. Architect’s Descendants Visit East Hampton Gem

Michele L’Hommedieu Hofmann had no idea until retiring last fall and starting to research her family history how prominent a role her great-great-grandfather James H. L’Hommedieu had played in Long Island’s late-19th-century architecture. On a trip to New York that included a stop at an East Hampton house he designed for Robert Southgate Bowne, a founder of the Maidstone Club and first president of the Long Island Rail Road, she and her family got a crash course in L’Hommedieu’s work.
