Fleming's Support Piles Up

Thu, 10/28/2021 - 09:05

Suffolk County Legislator Bridget Fleming, who is seeking the Democratic Party's nomination to represent New York's First Congressional District, has reported more than $468,000 raised and more than $331,000 on hand.

Ms. Fleming has also notched endorsements from a number of Long Island elected, political, and labor officials. They include Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr.; Rob Calarco, the Legislature's presiding officer; Legislators Sammy Gonzalez and Tom Donnelly; Rich Schaffer, the Suffolk Democratic Committee chairman, and the Democratic Committee leaders of Southampton, Shelter Island, Riverhead, Brookhaven, Smithtown, and Islip Towns.

John Durso, president of the Long Island Federation of Labor, and four other labor unions have also endorsed Ms. Fleming's candidacy. "All of this not only leads to monetary support but engaged volunteer bases that are ready to mobilize for Bridget in the primary and eventually flip this seat in November of 2022," a spokesman for Ms. Fleming said.

Ms. Fleming, who is also seeking re-election to the Legislature this year, is expected to compete in a Democratic congressional primary with Legislator Kara Hahn next year. To date, Robert M. Cornicelli is the only declared Republican candidate for the First District. Representative Lee Zeldin, who is serving his fourth term, is seeking the Republican Party's nomination for New York governor.
