Gingerbread Houses Abound

You may say, “Gingerbread, already? It’s only Thanksgiving.” But the season moves quickly and so do the gingerbread houses, so now is the time to make plans if you hope to attend a gingerbread house decorating workshop at the Children’s Museum of the East End in Bridgehampton or take part in Project Most’s gingerbread house contest.

At CMEE, the popular workshop, held this year on Dec. 6, typically sells out in advance. There will be two sessions: at 10 and at 11:15 a.m. The cost is $40 for members, $45 for nonmembers. Take-home kits will be available through Dec. 23, and registration is at cmee.org.

Also at CMEE, Katharine Holabird, the author of the Angelina Ballerina and Twinkle series of books, will continue an annual post-Thanksgiving tradition at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, when she reads from one of her much-loved hits. Copies will be available for purchase, and the author will sign them for young fans. Admission is $25 per child, or $5 for members. Advance registration on the museum’s website is required.

Back to Project Most, anyone interested in its gingerbread house contest can pick up kits for $35 after registering online at bit.ly/49z2Bvi. Fully decorated houses can be dropped off at 44 Meadow Way in East Hampton next Thursday or Friday, Dec. 5, between10a.m.and4p.m.oronDec.7by1p.m. That’s the day when voting on the houses takes place during Project Most’s holiday party. More about that next week.

SoFo Open House

A family open house at the South Fork Natural History Museum in Bridgehampton on Saturday will include walks focused on wild turkeys and insects, and a self-guided fall scavenger hunt.

Frank Quevedo, the museum’s executive director, will lead the turkey walk at the bright-and-early hour of 8 a.m. Advance sign-up is requested through the website. At 10, the museum opens for all to explore free of charge. The insect walk, with a special eye toward “sleeping spiders,” sets off at 11. Afternoon activities with the Goat on a Boat puppet theater were at capacity as of Monday, but there is a waitlist.

Those who attend the open house can join the museum or renew memberships for a 25-percent discount.

Sweet Treats

‘Tis the season for sweets, and at the East Hampton Library this week there will be two chances for young people to indulge a bit. High school students can stop by on Monday afternoon at 4 to enjoy a caramel apple bar in the young-adult room downstairs. No need to register.

On Wednesday, the library will join with Levain Bakery for a story time, a cookie-flavored brainstorming session, and a cookie ornament craft at 4 p.m. for kids 5 to 8. The next day, the bakery has invited participants to stop in at its Wainscott location at 4 for hot cocoa, a tour, and maybe even some cookies. Sign-up ahead of time is a must.
