Winter Break Nature Activities

The South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center in Bridgehampton has a lineup of special events that are appropriate for kids, taking them from Saturday through the following week, when most schools are closed.

On Saturday at 11 a.m., via Zoom, kids ages 10 and up can learn about great white sharks with a veterinary pathologist. At 3 p.m., SoFo is calling upon people of all ages to help out at an in-person, local beach cleanup, one of several the museum holds each year. The beach location is still to be determined, but participants can sign up ahead of time at sofo.org. And at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Andy Sabin, a herpetologist who is president of the SoFo board of directors, will lead a tiger salamander search near the museum. Participants should take a flashlight and wear sturdy boots. The cost for this event is $10 for adults and $7 for children, and it is free for museum members.

SoFo will also lead a seal walk at Cupsogue County Park in Westhampton Beach on Sunday at 2:30 p.m., appropriate for children ages 5 and up. The same admission costs apply.

For winter break, there are in-person activities planned each Monday through Thursday at 10:30 a.m. and Friday, Feb. 19, at 10. On Monday there will be a birdwatching walk through Vineyard Field, behind the museum. A search for woolly bear caterpillars will happen on Tuesday. A common sight in grass, these caterpillars eventually morph into Isabella tiger moths.

What do bugs do in winter? That question will be answered next Thursday on a nature walk through Vineyard Field. On Friday, Feb. 19, kids can learn how to identify the signs that animals are around them in nature.

The cost for each is $10 for adults and $7 for children. Registration is limited because of Covid-19 gathering rules, so advance sign-up at sofo.org is required.

Musical Break

Bay Street Theater's popular My Life: the Musical camp will be in session again for the school break week. Bethany Dellapolla, an actress and educator who directs the musical theater program at Pierson Middle and High School, is the teacher. The camp is for kids ages 7 to 12 and runs online Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The cost is $200 and sign-up is at baystreet.org.

Art Break

On Friday, Feb. 19, at 1 p.m., the Amagansett Library will host Joyce Raimondo as she gives a virtual tour of the Pollock-Krasner House geared toward kids. The art of Lee Krasner and her influence on other female abstract painters will be the focus, and Ms. Raimondo will lead an art project following the tour. The free event is appropriate for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. Registration is by emailing [email protected].
