That's Hysterical!

The New York Hysterical Society will host another round of comedy classes for children ages 10 to 16 in February through the Southampton Cultural Center. There will be a free introductory class on Feb. 7 from 1 to 3 p.m., and the full program is on Sundays beginning Feb. 28 and running through May 2. The group says the program incorporates lessons from "established comedians who share their skills, talents, and experience with the kids." A special performance for family and friends ends the session.

The full program is $295, and need-based scholarships are available. More information is online at metzoom.com/kids.

That's Charming!

What is "charm"? That's the question that the Southampton History Museum wants kids and teens to answer. The competition is a take on the legacy of Samuel Parrish, the last private owner of the Rogers Mansion in Southampton Village and the founder of what later became the Parrish Art Museum. In 1899, Mr. Parrish challenged Southamptoners to answer that very question in poems or prose of 100 words or fewer.

Today's version of the "what is charm" contest is open to kids in three age groups -- kindergarten through fourth grade, fifth through eighth grade, and ninth through 12th grade -- and seeks art in all forms, from poetry or prose to visual art, videos, and music or audio works. Audio and video entries should be under five minutes in length, and written works must be no more than 500 words. Submissions, which can be emailed in or dropped off, are due by March 13 at 4 p.m.

A registration link can be found on the museum's website at southamptonhistory.org/charm.

That's Interesting!

There's a full-moon hike tonight at 5:30 at the South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center in Bridgehampton, free and suitable for all ages. On Saturday, a birding walk will start at 10 a.m. on the Shinnecock barrier beach. This one's for children ages 10 and up. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for children, and free for members. Advance registration for these programs is required and can be done online at sofo.org.
