    Whether they will travel, move in with extended families, rent a smaller space, or relocate to their second home, ’tis the season for many local residents to pack up their belongings and vacate their houses to generate rental income from those who wish to enjoy the South Fork for the summer months.

   What despises sunlight and garlic and feasts on meals of blood? The ghoulish and ubiquitous tick, and Brian Kelly of East End Tick Control, which has been in business for 15 years, is the area’s own personal Van Helsing.

    May is National Tick Awareness Month, and even as it draws to a close, the little parasites are kicking into high gear, according to Mr. Kelly. “It’s definitely worse after the mild winter,” he said. “In the last five or six years, the ticks have become really bad. It’s a constant, uphill battle.”

Events in East Hampton

    Mark Addison, a design and “entertaining expert,” will open a satellite office in East Hampton this summer for his company, Eventstyle. Mr. Addison’s special-event clients have included big corporate names like eBay, Nestlé, and Target, but he also designs private parties and events.

    For the past dozen years, Eventstyle has produced an upscale charity yard sale here, known as Super Saturday.

    The business will be open until Labor Day. Its Web site is Eventstyle.com.

   Before Nancy Cervantes moved to the United States from Peru in 1985, she attended school for design, but dangerous conditions in Peru led her and her husband, Carlos, to leave their country. “We decided to come here, start a new life in a nice country,” Mr. Cervantes said on Saturday at his wife’s shop in Noyac, Nancy’s Tailoring.

   How do you know you’re getting old? When the sight of young people lining up all night to buy a pair of sneakers leaves you shaking your head in wonderment.

    That is exactly what occurred at Sneakerology, located beneath London Jewelers just off Main Street in East Hampton, on Friday night, when word got out that a rare Nike sneaker — only 18 pairs — would be available the next morning. A line formed of approximately two dozen hopeful customers.

Brokers Move

    Saunders and Associates has announced that Sandra Woodward Pullman, the former vice president of the Corcoran Group in Bridgehampton, has joined its ranks as the vice president of Saunders’s Bridgehampton office.

    In addition to her work in the real estate business, Ms. Pullman is a trustee of the Rogers Memorial Library in Southampton, and is currently the president of the Southampton Golf Club 9 Hole Association. She and her husband, Don, have three grown children, one of whom has earned both silver and gold medals in the Special Olympics.

   Seacoast Enterprises Associates Inc., an East Hampton firm that already manages Harbor, Gardiner’s, and Halsey’s Marinas — all located on Three Mile Harbor — has announced the purchase of the Three Mile Harbor Boatyard at the head of the harbor.

    Commonly called Story’s after its longtime owner Sam Story, the Three Mile Harbor Boatyard has catered to sailboats over the years with a boatlift hefty enough to haul them and a ship’s store offering sailing accessories. Harry Wessberg sold the yard to Robert Story in 1951. Sam Story bought it from his father in 1986.

    First quarter reports issued from two local real estate companies — Town and Country and Brown Harris Stevens — show an increase in sales for the first quarter of 2012 compared to the same period last year, contradicting a report from Suffolk Research Services that showed a flat market or a marked decline.

    “In all the years we’ve been in the business, our phone number hasn’t changed,” said Ernie Schimizzi, who, with his brother, Greg, has had a stronghold on the local television market for almost two decades.

    “We’re the last family-owned and run station on Long Island,” he added, referring to WVVH-TV, which can be seen as Hamptons TV on Cablevision Channel 78, on Fios at Channel 14, on YouTube, as a computer Web stream, and even on a smartphone through a recently available app, with an estimated 5 million viewers.

Public Relations Award

    Steve Haweeli, the president of WordHampton, which has its headquarters on Three Mile Harbor Road in Springs, will be honored with the Jack Rettaliata Lifetime Achievement Award when the Long Island Public Relations Professionals group holds its yearly party on May 8 in Carle Place. The award is named for the former vice president of Grumman Aircraft.

    According to a report from George Simpson, president of Suffolk Research Service, on sales of properties on the East End, the first quarter of 2012 is still showing a downward trend compared to the numbers from the first quarter of 2011.

    Two of the most reliable market indicators, median price and dollar sales (the total sales in dollars), both showed substantial declines in the five towns of the East End from the same period last year. The median price was down 12.6 percent from the same quarter last year and dollar sales were down 10.6 percent.

   Two large Day-Glo signs in the window of the Outdoors store in Amagansett ask passers-by to stop in to sign a petition to keep the shop in its current Main Street home, but despite the support of more than 400 customers and well-wishers, it appears the store could be losing its lease.

    Barry Adelman, who has owned the business for 15 years and had a lease on the storefront for just as long, learned on Feb. 21 that his landlords, Joe and Sal LaCarrubba, would not be renewing his lease.

     Ingrid Torjesen Kalfaian, a South Fork resident since 1994, has launched a new line of clothing and accessories, hand-dyed and hand-printed in her hometown of Montauk. Made in Montauk uses organic cotton for its yoga and beachwear, note cards, and clothing for children.

    The line is being carried at Tutto Bene in Bridgehampton, the Harbor Marina gift shop in East Hampton, and Gloria Jewel in Amagansett and Bridgehampton. Products can also be viewed online at montaukdesigns.com.

    According to local real estate agents, and a handful of disappointed customers who waited too long, the 2012 summer rental season is the busiest in a while, and those who tarry will be renting elsewhere — not on the South Fork.

    John Gicking, the vice president and manager of Sotheby’s International Realty’s East Hampton office, said, “The rental market is very strong. We have customers who are disappointed that they missed out on an oceanfront rental for this summer, and are already bidding on the same house for 2013.”

Sag Harbor Perfume

    Bond No. 9, a Manhattan perfumery with an outpost located on Main Street, Sag Harbor, will soon release a scent named for that village.

    Sag Harbor is described in a press release as “a languid, flower-garden, ivy-coated, marine-scented ode to that quietly beguiling alternative South Fork town.”

    The scent follows in the wake of other Long Island-inspired perfumes from Bond No. 9, including Fire Island, Coney Island, and Andy Warhol Montauk.

    The new perfume will be released Memorial Day weekend.

   When photography was invented, people said painting was dead, and when CDs came along, many thought vinyl recordings were dead. Then, with the rise of downloadable digital music, CDs looked destined for the trash heap.

    But things have a way of coming full circle. Painting is alive and well, and so, too, is vinyl, according to Craig Wright, who will open Innersleeve Records in Amagansett Square early next month, offering new and used LPs and CDs, along with rare poster art and music memorabilia.

   In a basement studio in Springs, amidst sewing machines, scissors, spools of thread, mannequins, and fabric, Temidra Willock enthusiastically presented a colorful collection of clothing she designed and fabricated and hopes to make accessible soon to the broader world. The small space was filled with sundresses, scarves with decorative trim, boxes of reversible beach hats, beach bags, and clutches, designed and sewn with dreams of a lucrative business under her label, Vivid Blueprint. It is “what I am meant to do,” said the 22-year-old designer.

    Capital One Bank is now accepting applications for its first financial literacy challenge on Long Island, an awards program that will dispense $5,000 each to 25 local organizations — from schools to nonprofits to community groups — to go toward the implementation of financial education programs.

    Of the 25 organizations participating in the challenge, the two that demonstrate the greatest influence on their communities will be selected to win additional grants of up to $15,000 in the spring of 2013.

BookHampton Goes North

    Who says literature is dead? Certainly not the owners of BookHampton, who are expanding the storybook kingdom over to Mattituck. A new Book­Hampton store will open there this weekend, joining sister stores in East Hampton, Southampton, and Sag Harbor.

    The latest incarnation of what has been called by Newsweek “one of the country’s great indie bookstores” has moved into the Gildersleeve Octagonal Building on the corner of Main Street and Love Lane. Opening celebrations will take place on Saturday and Easter Sunday.
