Three Painters at Grenning
“Summer’s End,” a show of new works by Carl Bretzke, Rolf Hellem, and Doug Reina, will open at the Grenning Gallery in Sag Harbor with a reception on Saturday from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Figures are incidental in many of Bretzke’s paintings, many of which feature scenes from the East End. Some are casual and explicit, such as a crowded room at the American Hotel, while others, such as an empty “Main Street Nocturne,” are moody and suggestive.
Mostly devoid of people, Reina’s crystal clear paintings depict the hard edges and bright sunlight in play over beach shacks, a bowling alley, and Montauk trailers.
Human figures are the center of Hellem’s paintings, which range from the physical drama of “The Fishermans Fight” to individual, often severe portraits.
The show will be on view through Oct. 12.
Talk and Book Launch
In conjunction with its current exhibition “Tony Bechara: An Artist of Many Worlds,” the Parrish Art Museum will host a conversation on the occasion of the launch of a new monograph on the artist on Sunday afternoon at 2.
The discussion will be moderated by Monica Ramirez-Montagut, the museum’s executive director, with Phong Bui, the publisher and artistic director of The Brooklyn Rail, and Kaitlin Halloran, the museum’s associate curator.
Published by El Museo del Barrio and KMEC Books, “Tony Bechara” spans five decades of the painter’s grid-based abstractions and offers a comprehensive look into his life and practice.
Tickets are $30, $25 for members’ guests, and free for members, residence benefits passholders, students, and children.
