Two at Halsey McKay
“Chiroforms,” new works by Timothy Bergstrom, and “Hum of Water,” mixed-media pieces by Charles Manion, are on view at the Halsey McKay Gallery in East Hampton through Nov. 29.
Starting in 2010, Bergstrom began using a glue gun to create the string-like lines that defined his paintings. Last year he moved the mark making off the canvas by letting strands of paint cure apart from the surface before attaching them by hand. The same heat that adds material can also remove it, leading to what the gallery calls “an alchemy all his own.”
A sailor and surfer, Manion often gathers flotsam to repurpose in artworks. For example, a boat ladder designed for his passengers becomes a stretcher for burlap. For his approach to carpentry, he arranges his compositions by building layers of gesso, molding paste, and pigment “that connect foundational groundwork to higher realms of artistic expression.”
New Juried Show
In July, Hamptons Juried, which is devoted to the artists of the East End, put out a call for artists to address the theme of “the energy of light” by interpreting light in any way they chose. The results can be seen at ARC Fine Art in Amagansett, where the show will open Friday with a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and run through Nov. 28.
From submissions by 179 artists, 51 were selected by the jurors: Adrienne Ruger Conzelman, the founder of ARC Fine Art, Fairfax Dorn, the founder of Ballroom Marfa in West Texas, Coco Myers, the founder of Folioeast, and David Netto, an acclaimed interior designer. Two artists, Jennifer Soccorsi and Kurt Giehl, founded Hamptons Juried.
