Slavic Soul
In partnership with Hamptons JazzFest, the Bay Street Theater will present “Slavic Soul Fest,” featuring Slavic Soul Party!, a nine-member Balkan brass band from New York City, on Saturday at 8 p.m.
Over the past 15 years, the band has released seven full-length albums while touring, according to its website, in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Turkey, and Zimbabwe -- from Carnegie Hall to Serbian schoolyards, festival stages to prison courtyards.
“Of all the NYC dance bands that draw on Eastern European music, Slavic Soul Party! is the coolest,” said Cristina Black in TimeOut NY. “SSP! jumps from traditional songs to contemporary covers and originals, connecting the dots of a number of folk schools with surprising finesse.”
Tickets range from $42 to $54.
Creativity in Water Mill
The Watermill Center’s In Process series of open studios and rehearsals by its resident artists will resume Friday at 5:30 p.m., with presentations of work by three artists-in-residence and Mehtap Baydu, the recipient of the Baroness Nina von Maltzahn Fellowship for the Performing Arts.
Ms. Baydu, who is based in Germany, is known for her performance and installation works, which focus, in multicultural contexts, on gender roles and sensitive religious and political issues.
Tsering Yangzom Lama, a Tibetan writer living in Vancouver, is working at the center on her second novel, “Run at the Rising Smoke,” which is set in 11th-century Tibet.
Richard Pasquarelli, a painter from New York City, is finishing a series of works based on his field research in the storage facilities of important art museums.
Scott Bluedorn, who lives in Sag Harbor, is working on “Native/Invasive,” a multidisciplinary project that explores dualistic ideas of belonging centered on ecology and human culture.
The program is free, but reservations via the website have been requested.
Jazz at the Temple
Jazz Night will return to the Masonic Temple in Sag Harbor with “Immerse Yourself in the World of Jazz,” Friday at 7 p.m. Presented with Hamptons JazzFest, the program will feature Jeff Lederer, tenor saxophone; Steve Sandberg, piano; Jason Maximo Clotter, bass, and Claes Brondal, drums.
Tickets are $20, part of which is donated to local charities. Doors open at 6:30.
Film Fest News
The 33rd Hamptons International Film Festival, set for Oct. 3 through Oct. 13, is now accepting submissions online through FilmFreeway. The regular deadline is April 3, the late deadline April 24, and the extended deadline May 15.
