“Going Through and Not Around,” a solo show of recent paintings by Jennifer Cross, will open on Saturday at the Sara Nightingale Gallery in Sag Harbor with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. It will continue through Dec. 15.
Ms. Cross’s recent paintings are thinly veiled surfaces of color on which traces and configurations emerge. Recurring motifs include flowers, studio environments, personal and political dramas, and the passage of time.
The show’s title was inspired by a 1994 Art in America review of Ms. Cross’s paintings by Gerrit Henry: “[Cross’s works] are singularly weird, astonishing, morbid, fantastic, and particularly her own. . . . Hope, they say, lies in going through, and not around, our most abysmal challenges.”
