A New (and Livable) Showhouse

Christiana Mascarenhas of In Plus presented one of the house's most expressive rooms: a den or salon off the entry foyer. In it, bright primary colors, and lots of them, set off the room's active walls and midcentury inspiration.

The Hamptons Designer Showhouse has opened in Southampton, with a newly constructed house high up on the moraine at 499 Broadway hosting 20 designers over three floors and an outdoor area.

With the exception of a dramatic dining room, den, and upstairs bonus room, the interior has an overall sedate and traditional atmosphere. The house itself is on the small side for a typical showhouse, but its size and overall design aesthetic are reflective of the way a lot of people live here: making the most of smaller lots and focusing on livability rather than high fashion.

Elissa Grayer Interior Design was responsible for the lively dining area, mixing a number of eclectic styles.

A great room has a kitchen area and a formal yet relaxed living area. Windows are used wisely throughout to give an open and airy feeling.

Beiges and neutrals are used to maximum effect, particularly in the bedrooms, which are all understated, some more colorful than others. But the palettes are traditional -- mostly pale blue, green, and pink -- as is the furniture. There are touches of midcentury modern inspiration throughout, with a few rooms concentrated on the theme. Here and there are touches of whimsy, like a gorilla-print wallpaper in the bonus room bathroom.

The primary bedroom's appearance was under the direction of Sea Green Designs, with an open feeling brought out by its use of neutral colors accentuated with deep blues.

A benefit for Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, the showhouse program has raised more than $2 million since it began. Jamie Drake and Alexa Hampton are once again serving as honorary design chairs.

Hours are Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sept. 3. The last admission is 30 minutes before closing. Admission is $40 and includes a copy of the showhouse journal.

Some of the firms designing rooms include Antonio DeLoach Design + Interiors, Melanie Roy Design, Colette Home, Susanne Kelley Design, Oxford Design Studio, Michelle Gerson Interiors, and Sea Green Designs. There are also four tabletop designs or tablescapes for summer entertaining inspiration offered by Melissa Sadowski of AreaEdit, Wendy Kvalheim of Mottahedeh, James Huniford of Huniford Design Studio for Hudson Grace, and Natalie Annette of Natalie Annette Design.

The Sweet Smell of Nostalgia at Sagaponack General

Stepping into the new Sagaponack General Store, which reopened yesterday after being closed since 2020, is a sweet experience, and not just because there’s a soft-serve ice cream station on the left and what promises to be the biggest penny candy selection on the South Fork on your right, but because it’s like seeing an old friend who, after some struggle, made it big. Really, really big.
