The Real Story

Montauk

September 29, 1997

Dear Editor:

Should I be writing this letter? That's neither here nor there. I'm a worker at Snowflake, a resident of East Hampton, and a parent, a mother. I read the article that you wrote in last week's Star. It all sounded very exciting. Mr. Cinque is going to keep this institution of East Hampton the same.

Unfortunately, being a worker at this establishment enables me to hear the real story. Mr. Cinque is not buying any of the ice cream equipment which makes Snowflake "Snowflake." He could buy it elsewhere, but what about the secret ingredients that make it their well-known, passed-down, homemade product?

I know what Mr. Cinque, the owner of the property and building, is saying, but the owner of the business, the huge soft and hard ice cream cones, the shakes, the half-pound burgers, the hospitality is being pushed out by the high rent Mr. Cinque is asking. The owner is not even being given the option of selling the business because the asking rent is almost tripled.

As I see it, nothing is going to be the same and once again East Hampton is going to lose!
