Hike, Bike, Or Weave
The East Hampton Trails Preservation Society has two hikes planned for the weekend. On Saturday, Lee Dion will lead hikers through the Grace Estate, pointing out such features as the site of a one-room schoolhouse, a farm building, and a family cemetery which were built 250 years ago.
Those interested have been asked to meet at 10 a.m. at the schoolhouse plaque on Northwest Road, a few hundred yards south of the intersection with Alewife Brook Road.
The next day from 9 a.m. until noon, Mike Bottini will show trekkers how a trail is designed. The group will actually help scout future trail possibilities on Napeague. Hikers are asked to meet at the abandoned railroad tracks on Cranberry Hole Road near the fish factory. This hike is co-sponsored by the Group for the South Fork. Reservations are required for this hike and can be made by calling the Group's headquarters in Bridgehampton.
Bike Hike
The woods in Montauk will be explored by mountain bike on Sunday from 8:30 until 11 a.m. The nature ride for bike aficionados is scheduled to be led by Andy Sabin of the South Fork Natural History Society, Eric Lamont, a botanist, and Peter Liss, a naturalist and supervisor of Montauk County Park. To learn the meeting place, bikers are asked to call the society at its Amagansett headquarters or contact its NatureLine.
The Nature Conservancy has scheduled two events for the weekend at the Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island. On Saturday beginning at 10 a.m., a workshop for children will teach them how to weave using natural materials such as vines, grass, yarn, and twigs. Grace Markman, an artist from New York City, will lead this one-hour event designed for children 5 and up.
Also on Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m., Dr. Steve Clemants of the Brooklyn Botanical Garden will lead a walk in the woods to find evidence of animals' preparation for winter. Both events are free for conservancy members, $3 for nonmembers. To register, those interested have been asked to call the conservancy's Shelter Island office.
