A new spin on gardening and landscaping design
By
Christopher Walsh

On Saturday, under sunny skies and in the warmest weather the South Fork has known in months, crowds descended on two-plus acres of beautifully landscaped grounds to experience a new beginning amid the rebirth of spring.

With a move to the former Jos. A. Hren Nurseries at 530 Montauk Highway, Groundworks Landscaping Inc., founded in 2002 by Linda Silich, Kim Hren, and Andy Silich, has consolidated its business onto one site.

In addition to offering gardening supplies like plants, soil, mulches, and fertilizers, Groundworks @ Hrens, as the site is called, puts a new spin on gardening and landscaping design. As an “outdoor living center,” the business encompasses furniture, pet supplies, fire pits, outdoor kitchens, and pond design. Also on site is a gift shop, offering necessities and otherwise for hosts or visiting guests.

The ownership team will also offer workshops, as well as community events such as the haunted Halloween rides and Christmas open-house happenings held at Jos. A. Hren Nurseries in years past.

“I remember every nook and cranny,” said Ms. Hren, whose grandfather founded the nursery in 1939. “It was always fun working here, so it’s nice to see it all come back and everybody get excited about it all over again.”

Groundworks had been based at 7 Toilsome Lane in East Hampton, with a holding yard for plants in Sagaponack. The move, said Ms. Silich, means greater convenience for staff and clients alike. “We’ve had this dream for a few years. We moved in the day after Christmas and got it rolling. It’s all come together in the last three months,” she said.

Ms. Hren is the lead landscape designer. She and Ms. Silich, designer and marketing chief, oversee the entire operation. Mr. Silich, who heads the landscape installation and maintenance divisions, oversees the landscape crew and the scheduling of all jobs.

The crew busily preparing the grounds for Saturday’s opening, Ms. Hren said, have been with Groundworks for many years. “It really is nice to see how happy they are, and that they’re taking pride in what they’re doing.”

Now, Khanh Can Do More

Khanh Sports is now stocked with 200 bikes
By
Christopher Walsh

“You don’t want to come in to a bike shop and see 10 bikes,” Khanh Ngo observed, standing in his newly opened Khanh Sports and Boutique. “You want to see 100.”

As it happens, Khanh Sports, occupying the former Spielberg Nursery and Garden Shop at 500 Montauk Highway in East Hampton, is now stocked with 200 bikes, among them a wide variety from the Specialized brand, and 8 and 11-speed ElliptiGO outdoor elliptical bikes. “This is like running without impact,” Mr. Ngo said of the ElliptiGO brand. “Doctors are recommending it; they’re using it in physical therapy. We are the biggest dealer, nationally and internationally. If you need instruction, I’m certified in it. I’ve done 111 miles in 7.5 hours.”

Mr. Ngo, whose Khanh Sports and EH Eyewear is in its 17th year at 60 Park Place in East Hampton Village, long felt the need to expand beyond the shop brimming with sunglasses, swimwear, sandals, and more for the active, outdoor lifestyle. With a lease on the former Spielberg site, he has put his plans in motion.

A personification of vitality and activity, Mr. Ngo, who has been in the United States — he is from Vietnam — since 1979, ticks off a list of products and services his shop offers.

“Helmets, accessories, gloves. Off-road bikes that you can actually ride on the beach, even in the soft sand. Everything is all in one place, versus ‘We can order it.’ We do repairs, too. In the other part we’re going to do surf. On top of that is the Ping-Pong table. Everybody’s got a pool; everybody’s got a house. They want a Ping-Pong table. Also, we are expanding to miniature golf. We could do it for parties, set it up at people’s houses. Eight holes, 9 holes, 18 holes, we’ll set it up on your lawn, wherever you want. Come on, where have you seen that done?”

There’s more: “Volleyball sets, tents, fishing gear. Here, we’re going to do some teak furniture,” he said. Several long paddleboards are suspended overhead in the shop. “We’re renting them, we have people doing lessons. I can’t display this at the store in the village. If I put it in the village, it’s on the sidewalk. There’s no room inside the store. Now, you can drive up, you can park as many cars as you want.”

Mindful Turtle, a Stony Brook yoga studio, will open a Montauk outpost at 34 South Erie Street, with classes starting tomorrow.

“I always liked the vibe out here and it seemed the right place to be,” said Danielle Goldstein, the owner and founder of Mindful Turtle. (The name comes from her father’s nickname for her and her two sisters — turtles.) She anticipates a very busy summer in Montauk.

“We’re responding to supply and demand,” Diane Ferraro, director of the Montauk yoga studio, said on Sunday, sitting cross-legged on the studio’s shiny wood floor.

Ms. Goldstein, who opened her Stony Brook studio four years ago, was looking to expand. Ms. Ferraro, a yoga instructor and part-time Montauk resident, had done some work for Ms. Goldstein through her Urban Siren public relations and marketing firm. The two decided to work together to open a studio in Montauk. While they were considering a new location, Ms. Ferraro saw a for rent sign for the lower level of a building that houses Mickey’s Carting Services offices, tucked away behind the Montauk Movie. “It’s time to go knock on that door,” she told Ms. Goldstein.

“It’s like a hidden treasure back here,” Ms. Goldstein said Sunday.

Ms. Ferraro lives in Montauk part time in the winter and full time in the summer. Her family used to own the Merry Mermaid Motel in the harbor area. She has spent two extended stays in India practicing her technique with notable yogis and plans to return each year to deepen her understanding of the ancient practice.

While other instructors will be hired, the partners hope to lead many of the classes themselves, some of which will start at 6:30 a.m. to accommodate people’s work schedules.

“We like to take the reins. It helps us connect with our students,” said Ms. Ferraro. She will be leading Mysore classes, in which the instructor moves through the class during a sequence of poses, adjusting and correcting practitioners. And just like in India and other places that offer ashtanga yoga, those classes will not be held on moon days, which include the new and full moon.

A full schedule and price list is available at mindfulturtle.com

“Stitch is just a place where you can do whatever you want,” Rose Dios, who owns the Southampton custom clothing and alterations shop, said during a fashion event she held there two weeks ago.

“This dress makes me feel happy,” Nina Beaty, an art therapist with a studio up the street, said as Sara Vicquez, the shop’s manager, helped her to take it in for a perfect fit.

Feeling good is the point. The shop’s goal, Ms. Dios said, is to help women achieve the look they’re after, whether through an alteration, a complete transformation of an old closet treasure, replicating of a favorite piece, or purchasing something new.

Alterations are a big part of the business, and how it originated. Women who have trouble fitting into “regular sizes” find comfort there, and Stitch also offers alterations for men, designer shoe and handbag repair, custom bridesmaid and mother of the bride dresses, and fur restyling.

Simpler designs are custom made inhouse — blouses in a bouquet of colors, skirts in varying lengths, colors, and fabrics. Ready-to-wear, dress-up-or-down cocktail dresses in an array of prints hang near the front of the store, and black-tie gowns are options too. The shop also carries designer fabrics.

“Lace is in right now,” Ms. Dios said, showing lace skirts with different-colored slips beneath them.

Clients sometimes want copies of dresses they’ve seen in magazines or on TV, or they might ask for Ms. Dios to replicate a style from long ago. Women might like a sleeve from one dress and the skirt from another. Stitch can put it together in the same dress. Measurements and details are taken in the shop, and then the dress is fabricated, either in-house or elsewhere, depending on the degree of complexity.

A custom-designed dress starts at $200, depending on the fabric. The boutique carries designer imports such as Etro, Pucci, Missoni, Chanel, Fendi, Armani, Oscar de la Renta, and Besanim, but has a some lower-priced options, too.

For the winter, Stitch has Italian and French faux fur, cashmere, and velvet. There are custom-designed and ready-to-wear hats, as well as belts, bags, gloves, jewelry, and other accessories. No piece of leftover material goes to waste. Cashmere cuttings, for example, are repurposed into headbands and scarves.

The Nugent Street shop also does monogramming, pillow and cushion covers, and other home goods. And for those who prefer their fittings in their own house, home consultations are offered. Stitch is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
