North Main Street in East Hampton Village will be closed between 6:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday as construction crews build a foundation for the new railroad bridge to be installed there, a spokesperson for the Long Island Rail Road said on Tuesday.
The trestles on North Main Street and Accabonac Road will be raised from 11 to 14 feet high with the installation of new bridges, which is scheduled to take place between Oct. 15 and Nov. 10.
Four six-foot-round caissons, or retaining structures, will be drilled 75 feet into the ground to form the foundation for those bridges. After the crews have finished installing the caissons at North Main, the L.I.R.R. spokesperson said, they will move to Accabonac Road later this week.
Work on the foundations will continue into next week, according to the L.I.R.R., and North Main Street and Accabonac Road will be closed on several occasions in the weeks leading up to the replacement of the bridges. One of the two roads will remain open throughout the project.
Between Oct. 15 and Nov. 10, the Montauk train line will be shut down. The L.I.R.R. said bus service will replace all train service east of Southampton. A bus schedule is still being finalized, but the current plan is to have buses stop at all railroad stations. Some buses will run express, and others local. A more detailed plan will be provided the week before the Montauk line is shut down, the spokesperson said.
