East Hampton Village

Someone kicked down four village signs at Georgica Beach last week. Village highway workers found them on the morning of May 29. They were able to put the signs back up, but there was minor damage to one of them.

Police and fire officials received several complaints of a smell of gas in the Main Street-Newtown Lane area in the early afternoon of May 28. No direct cause was found. PSEG-Long Island was notified.

A complaint about construction noise on Dayton Lane last Thursday at about 6:30 p.m. brought an officer to the scene. He did not hear any noise as he drove by, but there was nothing he could have done anyway, since the noise restriction law did not go into effect until three days later. Between June 1 and Sept. 15, contractors can only perform exterior work between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. from Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.

On Friday at about 1:30 a.m., noise also brought an officer to Maidstone Lane, where a contractor was setting up a tent for the weekend. The contractor said he would resume work in the daylight hours. At about 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, the first day of the noise restrictions, a warning was issued to a contractor at a Further Lane jobsite.

An intoxicated man was found standing in front of a house on the Circle on Sunday at about 2:15 a.m. Police said he did not realize he was at the wrong house. Police found his car parked in the driveway at a nearby house and spoke to someone inside who said the man was in fact staying there. Police escorted him to the house.

Montauk

Joseph Cucci of East Hampton was at Puff & Putt on May 27 at about 4:30 p.m. when, he told police, his iPhone XR was taken from a chair. Using the Find My iPhone app, he tracked it to an area of New York City. When he contacted the New York Police Department, he was told to file a report with East Hampton Town police first. Town police then turned the case over to the N.Y.P.D.

A Bronx man parked his 2017 Audi Q3 on the east side of the Shadmoor State Park lot at about noon on May 27 to walk the trails with a friend. When Colin Ho-Shing returned to the car at 6:30 p.m., the rear passenger window had been shattered and two Yves Saint Laurent leather bags belonging to his friend were missing. The value of the missing bags and the clothing and “expensive lingerie” inside were in excess of $3,000, according to the police report. Before filing the report at the Montauk substation, Mr. Ho-Shing took his car to a gas station and vacuumed out a quantity of broken glass.

On the afternoon of May 26, after an intoxicated man threatened a bouncer with a metal bat outside the Montauk Beach House Resort, police found the bouncer, Brian Seekamp, holding the man down on the grass near the entrance. Mr. Seekamp did not want to press charges, but wanted the man to leave the property. However, he was in no condition to drive. He then threw his keys at the officer and said, “Take my keys for the night, I don’t care.” Police gave him a receipt for the keys and he walked away.

While Jhonny Castillo-Perez was cutting the grass at the Neptune Motel on May 29 at about 3 p.m., his Stihl commercial leaf blower was taken from the bed of his pickup truck. The 2008 Toyota Tundra was parked facing east, in front of the motel, off the roadway. Mr. Castillo-Perez had been away from the truck for no more than 20 minutes, according to the report. No value was given for the leaf blower.

A fight broke out just before 1 a.m. Sunday at the Montauk Lake Club, on East Lake Drive, where police found a Hicksville man, intoxicated, yelling, and complaining of a fat lower lip. A Saint James man told police that the man had been following him around, accusing him of something he hadn’t done. He tried to walk away, he said, but the Hicksville man persisted. He said he felt threatened and punched him. Neither wanted to press charges. The Hicksville man left in a taxi and the Saint James man returned to his boat.

Sag Harbor

A bird’s nest caught fire atop a PSEG-Long Island pole on Redwood Road Friday morning. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and removed the nest.

On Saturday at around 3:20 a.m., an anonymous caller complained of a loud party on Walker Avenue, with possible under-age drinking. Police found no sign of under-age drinkers, but the music was turned up and the person living there shut it off. Police left after the party broke up.

Several residents of Division Street reported hearing gunshots on Monday night. One person said it was an ongoing situation in the part of the street that turns into a dirt road, near the water tower. Police also received a report of fireworks in that area the same night. Additional patrols were requested.

Over the last month, a woman has been staying overnight in the Old Whalers Church, without permission. Christopher C. Kohnken, the sexton, filed a report on May 29 after she left suitcases behind. A few days later, he found a backpack there and took it to police.
