Sydney Wood, a daughter of Kenny Wood, who led East Hampton High School to a state boys basketball championship in 1989, and her Northwestern University teammates earned at least a share of the Big 10 title with a 75-58 win over Illinois Saturday.

Howard Wood, Sydney's uncle, said Monday that his niece, a 5-foot-11-inch sophomore guard from Olney, Md., starts for the Wildcats and has been called the best perimeter defender in the conference. "She does it all -- she's second in rebounds, second in steals. . . . They're the second seed in the Big 10 tournament."

He added that Sydney's sister, Kayla, manages Notre Dame's women's team, and that their brother, James, a 6-6 junior outfielder and possible first-round Major League Baseball draft pick, is playing at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
