At Winter Track’s Small Schools Meet

Tue, 02/04/2020 - 16:03

Yani Cuesta, who coaches East Hampton High’s girls winter track team, said in an emailed account that the 4-by-400 relay team of Bella Espinoza, Ava Engstrom, Penelope Greene, and Lillie Minskoff would have broken a school record in that event absent a disqualifying out-of-the-lane baton pass at the county small schools meet Friday.

“It’s a long shot to qualify for the state meet, but I want to give them another chance,” Cuesta said. “At least now they know they can do it.”

In other events at the small schools meet, Greene placed sixth in the 1,500-meter race in 5 minutes and .01.10 seconds, a personal best. Engstrom was 13th in that event. Minskoff placed 11th in the 300, in 44.05, a personal best, Engstrom was 10th in the 3,000, and Mimi Fowkes, seeded sixth in the 1,500-meter racewalk, had to scratch, Cuesta said, “because she got the flu.”
