A handyman from Hampton Bays was arrested Friday and charged with three felonies in connection with two burglaries in Amagansett in June.
Bryan Ismael Morocho Albarracin, 21, has been accused by police of burglary in the second degree, a violent felony, grand larceny in the third degree, and fourth-degree grand larceny, also felonies.
According to a press release, Mr. Morocho Albarracin was working at a Katie Lane house when he allegedly entered a bedroom and stole "multiple pieces of jewelry" sometime between June 15 and 19. He allegedly then returned to the house on June 17 and again stole "several pieces of jewelry."
Police would not elaborate on the value of the stolen goods, but the charges indicate that the pieces are valued between $1,000 and $50,000.
He was tracked down by detectives Friday morning on Springville Road in Hampton Bays, where he lives with his uncle.
Those detectives flanked him in court Friday afternoon during his arraignment, where it came to light that Mr. Morocho Albarracin is out on bail on similar charges in Southampton Village.
According to Laura Gretz, his Legal Aid Society attorney, he posted $100 bail on Tuesday when he was arrested on third-degree burglary and third-degree grand larceny there. She said the case in Southampton Village occurred after the Amagansett incidents.
Ms. Gretz told the court that there was a strong likelihood that Mr. Morocho Albarracin could "end up in ICE [federal Immigrations and Customs Enforcement] custody." She asked the court to release him on supervised custody.
East Hampton Town Justice Steven Tekulsky called Southampton Village's bail amount "insufficient."
After a brief disagreement, Justice Tekulsky set bail at $35,000 cash, $70,000 bond or a $350,000 partially secured bond. Mr. Morocho Albarracin, who told the court that he is currently unemployed, was unable to post the amount and was taken by police to Suffolk County Jail in Riverside.
The county has until Wednesday to indict him on the charges.
If convicted on all charges, Mr. Morocho Albarracin could face up to 22 years in prison. The burglary charge carries a mandatory sentence of three-and-a-half years in prison.
He is expected to return to court in East Hampton on Wednesday.
