Amagansett

An Amagansett woman was the victim of fraud on Aug. 20. She told police she received a call from a woman claiming to be with Social Security. A vehicle registered to her had been found in Maryland, the caller said, and she needed to send money to clear her name or “they would come and get her.” The caller had her stay on the phone and drive to CVS to purchase a $2,000 Google Play gift card. When she returned, the caller had her scratch the card and provide the pin number on the back.

East Hampton

An East Hampton woman reported $2,000 in charges on her Enterprise Bank card, made between July 26 and Aug. 16. Most of the charges were made online, mainly for food delivery services in the Bronx. The woman filed a police report on Aug. 20. 

Workers at the East Hampton I.G.A. called police to report an intoxicated man attempting to steal a six-pack of Budweiser beer. The manager advised the man he could not steal from the store and placed the beer back on the shelf. The man left without incident, after which police found him in the parking lot behind the store. No charges were filed. 

East Hampton Village 

A group of five men were reportedly being rude to a hostess at Sam’s Restaurant on Newtown Lane at about 9 p.m. on Aug. 20. When the owner asked them to show a little respect in his restaurant, one of the men grabbed him by the arm and shoved him. Police were called, but the men left before an officer arrived. 

Police were called at about 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 21 when an “erratic driver,” eastbound on Woods Lane near Main Street, failed to move over for an ambulance with its emergency lights activated. An officer stopped the 2016 Cadillac in the Reutershan parking lot. No tickets were issued as police had not actually observed any violations. 

A 53-year-old man fell asleep on a bench in front of Schenck Fuel’s on Newtown Lane on Aug. 22. A concerned passer-by called police at 6:50 a.m., and he told them he had been waiting for a ride. He was asked to leave and did. 

A delivery driver was ticketed for distributing magazines in driveways on Aug. 22. Police pulled over the Chevrolet van on Ocean Avenue at around 6:40 p.m.

Last Thursday morning on Race Lane, an officer ticketed a driver who threw a banana peel out the passenger window of a 2002 Ford van. The driver, a St. James man, picked up the banana peel after police stopped him. 

Montauk

Police were called to a fight on DeForest Road just after midnight Sunday. Jeremy Shevett said he was hit in the face. As he tried to call 911, he said, his phone was knocked to the ground and the corner of the screen cracked. He was unable to say who hit him. Others also claimed they were hit during the incident. No one was arrested. 

Lawrence Cooke left his surfboard on DeForest Road with a For Sale sign on it on the afternoon of Aug. 14. When he returned the next morning, it was gone. The surfboard is worth about $250. 

Three 50-milliliter bottles of fireball whiskey were taken from Montauk Liquors & Wines on the Plaza at about 11 a.m. on Aug. 20. Workers at the store knew the man and declined to press charges, but told him he was no longer welcome there.

A patron at Rushmeyer’s tried to pay a $2,508 bill on July 14 at about 2:15 a.m., but his Discover card was declined. He said he would return the next day to pay it, but never did. 

Two surfboards that had been rented from Grain Surfboards in Amagansett were stolen from Ditch Plain beach on July 2 after one of the men who rented them left them there. They are worth over $2,500. 

Sag Harbor

A $20 bottle of sake was swiped from a shelf at Sag Harbor Liquors on Main Street last Thursday at about 8 p.m. A clerk said a man with bleached blond hair and a woman with long brown hair grabbed the bottle and put it into the man’s backpack.

Several items are missing, apparently stolen, from the costume shop at Bay Street Theater. Tracy Mitchell, the executive director, filed a police report on Friday. She said that a hat, worth $10, pants, worth $30, and a pink slip, worth $60, disappeared sometime between Aug. 22 at 9 p.m. and last Thursday at 4:20 p.m.
