Monica Youn for Writers Speak
“We are delighted to welcome Monica Youn to Stony Brook Southampton,” Christian McLean, host of the Writers Speak program, lecturer, and director of the writers conference at the college, said in a release. “The Writers Speak series serves as a bridge between world-class contemporary authors, our students, and our vibrant East End writing community, and Monica’s remarkable poetic voice and critical insight will make for a fantastic evening.”
That would be Monday at 7 in the Rakoff Studio of Chancellors Hall, and he’s enthused because Youn, a professor at the University of California, Irvine, comes with a pedigree of several New Yorker publications and a 2023 poetry collection from Graywolf Press, “From From,” that was a finalist for the National Book Award and named a New York Times notable book for that year. The collection, which addresses identity and stereotypes, draws its title from a question too often faced by Asian Americans, in essence, “Yes, but where are you from from?”
A period for questions and answers will follow the free reading.
From the Sag Harbor Writers Circle
The Sag Harbor Writers Circle, a group that meets weekly in the rotunda upstairs at the John Jermain Memorial Library, has come out with an anthology, “The Rotunda,” which collects “poetry and essays from local writers living on the East End of Long Island, inspired by the beautiful landscapes and community of people that surround them,” according to publicity material.
The book is available on the group’s website, theshwc.com, at Finley’s Fiction in Southampton Village, and should be at Barnes & Noble in Bridgehampton before Thanksgiving.
The writers are Dara Berger of LTV’s “East End News” and, per the website, Joan Butler, Barbara Colasuonno, Kate Ermilio, Carol Morgan, Rebecca Jones, Mira Johnson, Mary Ellen Roche, Michael Ruesga Kohler, Mary Ellen Schelz, and Barry Silverstein.
