Celebrating Recycling

By
Janis Hewitt

Visitors to the Montauk Recycling Center will notice some changes for the better this week. After months of hard work, the winners of a Montauk School student art contest posted their environmentally-minded murals on nine recycling bins there on Tuesday.

Bob Stern, president of Concerned Citizens of Montauk, and his wife, Daphne Stern, pitched the idea last spring when the students were in seventh grade. Riverhead Building Supply donated the plywood for the murals. On Tuesday, Mike Mahoney, C.C.O.M.’s vice president, and Paul Salzman, an art teacher at the Montauk School, helped the kids mount the plywood boards that featured scenes of beaches, seaside cliffs, wooded areas, and seagulls flying about.
