Hamptons Film Fest Raises Curtain on Year 25

On Thursday night, the Hamptons International Film Festival celebrated the opening of its 25th anniversary with a screening of the film "Itzhak," a PBS "American Masters" documentary on the violin virutoso Itzhak Perlman, at Guild Hall in East Hampton.

A sold-out crowd packed the John Drew Theater to see the film, introduced by the festival's co-chairmen, Alec Baldwin and Randy Mastro. The festival presented a  short film with interviews of its founders, alumni, and current leadership describing the early days and the growth that has occured over time. Steven Spielberg recalled his visit to the first festival, where his surprise panel discussion with Martin Scorsese caused quite a stir and helped establish it as a serious endeavor.

Several of the founders and important leaders of the festival from past and present were recognized in the opening remarks.

The screening of "Itzhak," which focuses on the personal and professional life of Mr. Perlman and his family, was warmly received by the crowd. The film's stars, Mr. Perlman and his wife, Toby Perlman, each participated in the post-screening festivities. Ms. Perlman discussed the film with David Nugent, the artistic director of the festival, and Alison Chernick, the film's director.  Mr. Perlman joined students from the Perlman Music Program, which he and his wife founded on Shelter Island, for a performance of a Mendelsohn piece.

An opening night party followed at the Maidstone Club.
