The Long Island Basketball Foundation will honor the legendary local basketball coach Ed Petrie on Saturday in Wainscott while also raising money for the Ed Petrie Legacy Scholarship. The fund-raiser will be held at the Clubhouse on Daniel’s Hole Road from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets cost $50 and can be reserved at bit.ly/4vUKGYm.
Petrie coached at Pierson High School in Sag Harbor from 1959 to 1969, leading the Whalers to their first league title in 20 years, before moving on to East Hampton High School, where he remained until his retirement in 2010. His East Hampton teams won state titles in 1977 and 1989. He also boasted 20 league titles and three county championships.
Among his other accolades, he is in the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame, the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame, the Seton Hall University Hall of Fame, the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame, and the East Hampton High School Hall of Fame. He died in 2015.
