There are likely few people who can claim to be not only a Grammy Award-nominated bassist for the Avett Brothers, but also the author of a much admired biography of John Quincy Adams. Bob Crawford can make that claim.
He will be at The Church on Friday at 6 p.m., not to make music but to talk with John Avlon, a journalist and 2024 congressional nominee, about “America’s Founding Son: John Quincy Adams, From President to Political Maverick,” which was published in March by Zando to starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and Library Journal.
The sixth president, who served from 1825 to 1829, Adams was defeated in the 1828 presidential election. Elected to the House of Representatives in 1830, he became increasingly critical of slavery and an opponent of Andrew Jackson, the seventh president, whose executive overreach has “eerie similarities to modern times,” according to The Church.
Crawford will take questions and sign copies of the book after the conversation. Tickets are $25, $22 for members.
Jazz Quintet
In partnership with Hamptons JazzFest, The Church will host a concert by the Meg Okura Quintet on Saturday at 6 p.m.
Born in Tokyo and trained at Juilliard, Okura is a Grammy-nominated violinist and composer who blends classical technique with jazz improvisation and global influences. She has performed with Michael Brecker, Lee Konitz, and David Bowie, and appeared at such venues as Birdland, Blue Note, and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Featured with the quintet is Sam Newsome, who “compresses a lot of energy into the sound of his soprano saxophone,” according to Nate Chinen of The New York Times.
Tickets are $35, $30 for members, and $20 for students under age 18.
For the Makers Market
In other news of the Sag Harbor cultural center, a call has gone out for applications by “makers, artisans, artists, and tinkerers” to take part in its sixth annual Holiday Makers Market, which will be held on Nov. 28 and 29. The application deadline is Sept. 13 at 5 p.m. The market will feature more than a dozen craftspeople, who will offer a selection of home goods, clothing, jewelry, and more.
