A “shirtless and stumbling” man was arrested Saturday afternoon after being involved in a car accident police said was caused by his drinking and driving.
Jefry Geovany Hernandez Salazar, 26, of Sag Harbor, was charged with eight counts that afternoon, the most serious being two felony-level charges of driving while intoxicated.
According to East Hampton Village police, an officer on routine patrol on Montauk Highway near the Toilsome Lane traffic light first noticed some debris in the roadway. The officer then spotted a Nissan Versa by the side of the road with front-end damage.
The car was still running when the officer approached the driver, who was described as “stumbling around the vehicle.” He told the officer he was not injured.
In a separate report, police said the accident that had just occurred was caused when Mr. Hernandez Salazar crossed the double yellow line, hitting an oncoming pickup truck. The driver of the truck, who was also uninjured, told police he was unable to avoid the car.
Police said Mr. Hernandez Salazar appeared unsteady on his feet, his speech was slurred, he smelled of alcohol, and he did not pass roadside sobriety tests. A check of records indicated that he had been convicted of D.W.I in 2024, triggering the felony charge.
Additionally, police charged Mr. Hernandez Salazar with aggravated D.W.I., also a felony, as well as five traffic violations, including a charge relating to consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle. He was held overnight and released on his own recognizance the following morning to await a future appearance in East Hampton Town Justice Court.
