An accident on Montauk Highway in Wainscott last week that left two drivers injured was caused by sun glare, according to East Hampton Town police.
On Sept. 14 at 5:45 p.m., police were notified of a rear-end collision at the intersection of Wainscott Northwest Road and Montauk Highway. Jorge M. Sousa, 44, of Selden, told police he was waiting at a red light when he was rear-ended by Caterina Neves of Centerport, who said that glare from the sun caused her to believe the light was green, and that Mr. Sousa would drive on, into the intersection.
Ms. Neves, 54, complained of abdomen pain; Mr. Sousa was apparently suffering from whiplash. Both were taken by ambulance to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for treatment.
Motorcyclist Injured
In Sag Harbor on Friday, a motorcyclist was injured after being hit on Hampton Street by the driver of a van. Village police, who did not release the names of the two men involved, said the van was turning left onto Jermain Avenue. Its driver told officers he had not seen the Triumph bike coming in the opposite direction when they collided.
According to police, the biker was ejected and hit the hood of the van before rolling off. Upon arrival they found him lying in the street, complaining of back and arm pain. He was transported to Stony Brook Southampton, where police later said he was treated for a wrist injury.
