Update, Friday, 12:15 p.m.: New York State police have identified a woman found dead in the woods in Montauk Thursday as 35-year-old Lauren Balik of New York City.
Hikers found Ms. Balik's remains while on a trail near Camp Hero State Park.
According to Brittany Burton, the State Police Department's public information officer, the investigation is still open and no further information was available as of midday Friday.
Original, Thursday, 8 p.m.: Police from various departments are investigating after a body was found in the woods in Montauk Thursday afternoon.
Hikers found human remains while on a trail south of the east overlook on Montauk Highway in state parkland, according to Capt. Gregory Martin of the East Hampton Town Police Department.
Local officials said that although they responded to initial calls to the scene, the state police are handling further investigation, since the body was found in the state park. No further information was available on Thursday evening.
