A Triathlon, a Surf Contest, and a Fishing Tournament in Montauk

Those searching for the thrill of competition can head to Montauk this weekend, where a triathlon, a fishing tournament, and a surfing contest are all planned.

The Kiwanis Club of East Hampton and the Montauk Friends of Erin are hosting the annual Montauk Mercury Grand Slam Charity Fishing Tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Uihlein's Marina. More details can be found at mtkmercurygrandslam.com.

Also this weekend are the Montauk Lighthouse Triathlon on Sunday at 6:30 a.m. and the Rell Sunn benefit surf contest on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Ditch Plain. Registration details for the triathlon can be had by emailing [email protected]. Registration for the surf contest is online at bit.ly/3JNYe1y through Thursday or in person on Saturday. In case of rain or no waves, the surf contest will be held on July 22.

A Call to Rein in Chain Stores in Sag Harbor

Residents of Sag Harbor have come together to denounce what some see as a troubling wave of chain stores. A petition launched by Save Sag Harbor that calls for new legislation to define and limit “formula retail” or “chain establishments” in the village has been signed by over 500 people in the last week.

GeekHampton Moves West

After 15 years in Sag Harbor, GeekHampton, which sells and services Apple products, will close on Tuesday at 6 p.m. It will reopen on May 4 in Hampton Bays.

Item of the Week: Long Island Refugees in Connecticut, 1777

This Thomas Dering and John Hulbert letter had to do with issuing permits of return to those who’d fled Long Island during the British occupation, which is also the topic of the next Tom Twomey lecture Friday night at the East Hampton Library.
