Sharpen Those Blades, It’s Contest Time
The annual carving contest hosted by the Bridgehampton Lions Club will make you rethink what a jack-o’-lantern can be. Gourds, pumpkins, squash of all varieties, even carrots, turnips, and beach grass are the raw materials for this annual contest. This year they’ll be on display at the Bridgehampton Museum’s Corwith House on Sunday at 5 p.m.
If you want to enter, there are 14 categories. The slightly more traditional — Classic Jack and Fright Market — give way to the increasingly offbeat and out there — Area 51, Terrified Pets, Midway Mayhem, Odd Lot, Curious Things, How Does Your Garden Grow, Comic Relief, Steampunkn, and Jack Cousteau. And, in keeping with the times, there’s also Pumpk Intelligence, Emoji Patch, and U-Pick Protest. Master Blade prizes, for best in show, come with $400 for first, $250 for second, and $150 for third. There are also two all-age prizes of $60 and $40.
Creations should be made in advance and taken to the Corwith House for display and judging on Sunday.
$5 for All That?
The East Hampton Kiwanis Club’s Halloween Family Fun Day returns on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the American Legion grounds in Amagansett. Admission is $5 and includes pony rides, a petting zoo, pumpkin painting, face painting, bounce houses and slides, games, cotton candy and popcorn, and a costume parade with prizes. Keith Leaf will entertain the crowd with juggling, and there will be live music.
Available for purchase will be $1 hot dogs, $2 hamburgers, and coffee, soda, water, and snacks. In case of rain, the fair will be held on Sunday.
Ragamuffin Parade
Calling all witches and goblins, princesses and superheroes, the Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce’s Ragamuffin Parade is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. The costume parade is always a good time, whether you’re dressing up yourself or just there to watch. The gathering place is Nassau Street, next to the Sag Harbor Launderette.
Early Halloween at the Library
The East Hampton Library is brewing up a cauldron of Halloween happenings for Saturday, when the library will go all out from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tarot readings will be given throughout the day, with games and crafts, face painting, pumpkin decorating, a scavenger hunt, and a glow dance party in the Baldwin Room. Sign-up for a costume contest — with prizes for the most creative, original, and spooky — will be at the circulation desk. Judging will be at noon.
There will be Halloween movie trivia and movies throughout the day: “Spookley the Square Pumpkin” at 10:30, “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo” at 11:20, “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” at 12:35, and “Hocus Pocus” at 1:05.
CMEE Bashes
Halloween comes a week early to the Children’s Museum of the East End in Bridgehampton, too. A party tomorrow from 4 to 6 p.m. will have activities geared toward kids 2 to 8, including “truck or treat” outside. The cost is $25, or $5 for members.
On Tuesday, it’ll be the babies’ turn, when a bash for little ones 2 to 18 months is planned from 10 a.m. to noon. This one costs $30, $10 for members. Advance sign-up is a good idea and can be done through the website.
