Sumo at Stella Flame
The Stella Flame Gallery in Bridgehampton and Sen restaurant in Sag Harbor have joined forces for an exhibition of work by Lynn Matsuoka, an American artist whose art documents the ritual, movement, and drama of traditional Japanese sumo. The show will open Saturday with a gallery talk from 12:30 to 1 and a reception from 1 to 3. It will run through Nov. 15.
Matsuoka traveled to Tokyo in 1973 for a six-month assignment and remained in Japan for 42 years. Fascinated by sumo at her first tournament, she began drawing the wrestlers from life and gradually gained access to sumo training sessions, tournaments, and dressing rooms.
