A Magician Conjures a Firecracker 8K Win

Tue, 07/09/2019 - 16:49

Oz Pearlman, 36, of New York City, who besides a number of marathon wins is known as a magician and mentalist, won, perhaps predictably, Sunday’s Firecracker 8K (4.96-mile) race in Southampton in 27 minutes and 36.68 seconds, topping a field of 245 entrants.

“The women’s field was especially strong,” Barbara Gubbins, 59, the eighth-place female, said at her East Hampton store Monday.

Caroline Birnbaum LeFrak, 35, of New York City, who ran at Duke and Columbia and who won this race outright in the past, was the runner-up, in 28:27.46. Tara Farrell, 40, of East Quogue, the fourth woman finisher (and 15th over all), was the female masters winner.

Age-group winners included Patricia Fall Salamy of Springs (50-54), Gubbins (55-59), Paul Maidment of East Hampton (65-69), and David Pitches of Montauk (70-74). Penelope Greene, 16, of Sag Harbor placed second in the 15-19 division, and Emi Berger, 42, a former East Hamptoner who lives in Denver, and Arthur Nealon, 78, of New York City and East Hampton were third-place finishers in the 40-44 and 70-74 age groups.
