Friday and Saturday Fun for Adults to Benefit Kids

Fri, 04/12/2024 - 15:02

Parties on Friday night at the Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett and Saturday night at the Clubhouse in Wainscott will each benefit programs for children.

The annual Springs Break party at the Talkhouse, hosted by the Springs School PTA, happens Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. Tickets cost $30 at the door. There will be music, raffles, a silent auction, and food trucks, and everyone who attends — 21 and over, please — gets one raffle ticket with entry. Proceeds support the many activities the PTA sponsors for Springs students each year.

Those at the fund-raiser can also stay for free to see the 10 p.m. band, About Last Night, on the Talkhouse stage.

Over in Wainscott on Saturday, a Copacabana Night at the Clubhouse on Daniel’s Hole Road at 6 p.m. will raise money for the Eleanor Whitmore Early Childhood Center. Tickets, which cost $25, include a prix fixe menu. The Bluestone Band will keep the dance floor full starting at 7, and there will be a raffle and a cash bar. Tickets are available in advance at bit.ly/49ugxTF.

A raffle offers some 30 items donated by local businesses, including gift certificates at local eateries at shops and fitness classes.

The nonprofit Whitmore Center in East Hampton provides early childhood education and child care to those 18 months to 4 years old.

A Renewed Focus on Fresh Fish

Dock to Dish, a restaurant-supported fishery cooperative founded in Montauk in 2012, has new owners and a renewed focus on getting fresh-from-the-boat seafood directly into the kitchens of restaurants across the East End and the New York area. And the fact that most of the owners are also fishermen doesn’t hurt.

8,000-Pound 'Underweight' Minke Whale Washes Ashore Dead

A female minke whale measuring 26 feet long and weighing nearly 8,000 pounds washed up dead on a Bridgehampton beach on Wednesday. "It had a thin blubber layer; we would consider it underweight. It was severely decomposed," said Rob DiGiovanni, chief scientist for the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society.

On the Wing: Dawn Chorus in Spring

The dawn chorus of birdsong is different depending on your habitat, your location, and the time of year. Songbird migration will peak by mid-May. As songbirds migrate overhead during the night, they blanket the sleeping country with sound, calling to each other to keep their flocks together and tight. When they land, they sing us awake.
