Sag Harbor Seeks New School Board Member

The Sag Harbor School Board is accepting applications through Friday for school district residents interested in filling a vacant seat on the board until regular elections in May.

The vacancy follows the Dec. 14 resignation of the board's president, January Kerr. The board agreed that day to appoint a replacement in order "to maintain a full governance body of seven members," according to a letter to community members.

Letters expressing interest and detailing qualifications should be emailed to the board at boe@sagharborschools.org by midnight Friday. The board plans to conduct interviews on Monday and Tuesday, and to make an appointment on Jan. 28.

In order to serve on the board, people must be United States citizens who have been voters in and residents of the school district for at least a year. They may not be employed by the district or "hold another incompatible public office or position of employment," and they may not live in the same household as another board member as a member of the same family.

If the person appointed to the position wishes to continue on the school board, he or she will have to stand for election in May, when voters will go to the polls to select three board members.

The board meets twice a month on Mondays, typically from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The district clerk can provide further details at 631-725-5300, extension 412, or vhandy@sagharborschools.org.

The school board will hold its first budget meeting of the year on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the Pierson library and will meet again on Tuesday at 6 p.m. to interview candidates.
