Montauk Hikes Into the New Year

The East Hampton Trails Preservation Society will host two hikes in Montauk this week. On Saturday at 10 a.m., Eva Moore will lead a three-mile hike to the seal haul-out site to hopefully see seals sunning on the rocks near the shore. Dress warmly, with sturdy footwear and don’t forget the binoculars. The meeting place is on Camp Hero Road, a right turn off Route 27 about a mile past Deep Hollow Ranch. Call 631-238-5134 for more information.

To help people start the year off right, the society will lead another one on New Year’s Day, a brisk seven-mile hike through Hither Woods out to the water. The meeting place is the western overlook on Montauk Highway at noon for this moderately paced hike with some hills. Snacks, liquids, and appropriate clothing have been suggested. Rick Whalen, who will lead, can be called at 631-275-8539 for more details.

There will also be two hikes to the seal haul-out site from the Montauk Lighthouse concession stand. The first, on Sunday, will begin at 9 a.m. The second will be on New Year’s Day at 10:30 a.m. The three-mile excursion costs $4 per person, children under 3 are free. Reservations are required as space is limited. Spots can be reserved by calling the Montauk State Park office at 631-668-5000.
