PSEG-LI Warning

PSEG-LI, the utility company, has issued an alert to customers regarding a recent rash of phone scams.

“Phone scammers posing as PSEG Long Island employees call and insist you are delinquent on your bill,” the company said in a press release last week. The caller may threaten to cut off the victim’s power. Frequently, PSEG warned, scammers rig the caller ID number that appears on the victim’s phone to one similar to the utility’s own. They usually demand that payment be made by a specific pre-paid debit card.

Customers should “never pay over the phone,” PSEG said, even if the caller threatens disconnection.

People receiving suspicious calls are advised to hang up, then notify police, and PSEG as well, at 800-490-0025.
