Ronald Cunningham

March 28, 1956 - May 5, 2015

Ronald Cunningham, a certified nursing assistant, came to the South Fork as a live-in caregiver a few years ago. He was the “consummate caregiver,” said a friend of 30 years, Tom Patterson of McAlisterville, Pa., Mr. Cunningham’s home base. “It was a labor of love. It was his passion. He would do nothing else.”

Mr. Cunningham, 59, was about to begin work for a new family when he unexpectedly fell ill. He died in Southampton Hospital’s intensive care unit on May 5 with Mr. Patterson by his side. His death was attributed to pneumonia.

Self-employed for over 35 years, Mr. Cunningham was certified in several states. He worked in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Mexico, Connecticut, New Jersey, Florida, and New York.

He was born on March 28, 1956, in Trenton, N.J., and educated at the Sacred Heart School there and at the Notre Dame School in Lawrenceville, N.J. He later attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

His mother, Joyce Cunningham, survives, as do two brothers, Mike and Darryl Cunningham, all of Trenton.

Mr. Patterson said his friend’s wish was to be buried in the mountains of Pennsylvania.
