Ralph J. Ficorelli Sr., a co-owner of Suburban Sanitation and a leader in the Sag Harbor American Legion, died on Sunday at Southampton Hospital. He was 81 and had been ill.

Mr. Ficorelli ran Suburban Sanitation in Sag Harbor with Jack McLaughlin. The company provides residential and commercial waste removal, as well as snowplowing and other services. He lived on Joseph Francis Boulevard in Sag Harbor.

A veteran of the United States Army who served from 1954 to 1956 and was stationed in Alaska, Mr. Ficorelli was the commander of the Chelberg-Battle Post of the American Legion for two terms. He also served as its first vice finance officer and chaplain.

A Sag Harbor native, he was born there on May 19, 1933, to Pietro Ficorelli and the former Cesira Liberti. He went to St. Andrew’s Catholic School in Sag Harbor and then Pierson High School. Sixty-one years ago, he married the former Lois Banzul, who survives.

Mr. Ficorelli’s family said that he devoted his life to them and to the Sag Harbor community and that he touched many lives. “He was a loving, strong, humble, and hardworking man, whose smile would warm everyone he met. He will be missed by many,” they said.

In addition to Mrs. Ficorelli, he is survived by his children, all of whom live in Sag Harbor. They are Joanne Stratton, Claudia Prieston, Ralph Ficorelli Jr., and Jennifer Glass. Three grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, and 12 nieces and nephews also survive.

Visiting hours will be today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor. A funeral Mass will be said for him tomorrow at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
