South Fork Rallies for Breast Cancer Awareness

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and across the South Fork there are events planned to bring attention to and raise money for breast cancer charities. Here are some events or fund-raising initiatives we found. Know of more? Leave a comment below.

On Friday, in East Hampton, a breast cancer awareness health fair was held at Most Holy Trinity Church on Buell Lane, but if you missed it, another will be held on Nov. 7.  Those who do not have health insurance are encouraged to sign-up for free clinical breast examinations, Pap smears and mammograms. The fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sabrosa Mexican Grill, a new restaurant on Montauk Highway in Water Mill, is donating the amount of the total bill for the 100th customer each day in October to the Coalition for Women's Cancers at Southampton Hospital.

Deborah Thompson Day Spa, located on The Plaza in Montauk, will donate 10 percent from all treatments this month to the coalition.

Brahmin, a handbag company with a store on Jobs Lane in Southampton, is donating proceeds from fall sales to the National Breast Cancer Foundation throughout the month of October. Brahmin will give 20 percent off any one item when customers donate $5 to the foundation.

Naturopathica Spa in the Redhorse Plaze in East Hampton is also offering a discount for services with a portion of proceeds going toward the Ellen Hermanson Breast Cancer Center at Southampton Hospital. Visit the spa Monday through Friday during October and receive 20 percent off your treatment as part of the offer.

On Wednesday, Southampton Hospital is kicking off a Give Where You Live campaign, which is meant to create awareness about the need to support organizations on the East End, with an event at 4 p.m. at the Parrish Memorial Hall on Herrick Road and Lewis Street in Southampton.

The annual Shelter Island 5K Run/Walk to raise money for the North Fork Breast Health Coalition and the Coalition for Women's Cancers at Southampton Hospital will take place at Crescent Beach on Shelter Island on Oct. 18. The race starts at 11 a.m. A raffle will also benefit Lucia's Angels, a foundation that supports women and their families through the late stages of terminal cancer.

Also on Oct. 18, the Birdhouse Auction, with houses designed by local artists, will benefit the Coalition for Women's Cancers and Lucia's Angels. It will be held at the Southampton Social Club at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door.

What's better than shopping for a good cause? Calypso St. Barth on Newtown Lane in East Hampton will donate a percentage of sales on Oct. 23 to Lucia's Angels. You must shop between 5 and 7 p.m.

In November, the fund-raising continues. Chicks with Sticks Yarn & Craft Sale will be held at the Parrish Memorial Hall in Southampton on Nov. 8 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those who knit, crochet or love crafts are invited to this event to benefit the Coalition for Women's Cancers.

The annual Girls' Night Out at Gurney's in Montauk is a night for women to enjoy cocktails, dancing, and pampering in support of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the Coalition for Women's Cancers.
