Black Cats Need Love (and Adoption) at Halloween Time

Let's face it, black cats get a bad rap during the month of October, thanks to Halloween. Now the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, in an effort to prove otherwise and in memory of one of its supporters, is hosting a special promotion.

During this month, if you adopt a black kitten or cat, you will receive a $75 gift certificate to Cafe Max in East Hampton. The promotion started a few years back when Nancy Weintraub, the owner of the restaurant, found black kittens there. They ended up at ARF through its operation cat program, and she wanted to help get them adopted.

"She also knew that black animals were usually overlooked at shelters, and she wanted to bring attention to them to help get them adopted," according to Jamie Berger, the director of marketing and communications at ARF.

Mrs. Weintraub died last year. Her husband, Max Weintraub, is contributing in her memory.

Adoptable cats, like Misty and Mickey featured here, can be viewed online at or visited by calling the Adoptions Team at 631-537-0400, extension 203.

Available pets can also be seen during the Halloween Pawty at ARF Hamptons on Oct. 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. People, and pets, can take a walk along a haunted trail and enter to win a best-costume contest for children and pets. Admission is free. The adoption center is at 91 Daniel's Hole Road in Wainscott.
