One hundred and two Springs students, from sixth to eighth grade, participated in the first round of this year's MathCON, a national online math competition, last month.

The event, which is open to students in third through 12th grade, is sponsored by Concept Schools and the University of Illinois at Chicago. This year, there were 49,685 contestants nationwide, with the top 576 students winning a spot in the national finals on April 22 in Chicago.

Twelve Springs students scored in the 85 to 95 percentile as compared to their grade level peers across the country. In addition, two students, Morgan Grant, an eighth grader, and Thomas Vilar, a seventh grader, scored in the 99th percentile and qualified as alternates for the finals. The students were honored during Monday's school board meeting.
