New Alan Bennett Play from National Theatre Live

Encore screening of "Allelujah!" at at Guild Hall

“Allelujah!” — a new play by Alan Bennett filmed live last July during its limited run at London’s Bridge Theatre — will have an encore National Theatre Live screening at Guild Hall Friday at 7 p.m. The production is the 10th collaboration between Mr. Bennett, whose other plays include “The History Boys” and “The Madness of George III,” and the award-winning director Nicholas Hytner.

“Allelujah!” is set in the geriatric ward of the Bethlehem, a Yorkshire hospital threatened with closure. The play pits the head of the hospital’s trust, who wants to keep it open, against a health industry management consultant who wants to shut it down as part of an effort to eviscerate the National Health Service.

Michael Billington of The Guardian called it “a play full of quiet anger under its surface charm” and “a sharp, funny, subversively political play whose episodic structure is cleverly camouflaged by Nicholas Hytner as director.”

Tickets are $18, $16 for members.
