Robert Edward Stone Sr., May 19, 1927 - November 21, 2018

Robert Edward Stone Sr. passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at his home in East Hampton on Wednesday, November 21, 2018.

He was born on May 19, 1927, in Sag Harbor to Joseph Horace Stone and Florence Isabelle Brown Stone.  The family later moved to East Hampton, where he attended school and was a member of the Methodist Church. Better known as Rocky, most would say he was “the finest kind.” He was as honest and genial as they come, a very caring and generous man to all who knew him.

He was a man who loved being on the water and outside, he could always be found fishing, clamming, scalloping, hunting with one of his many field dogs, or tending to his large vegetable and flower gardens.  He often had people laughing as he retold stories of his youth and old East Hampton.

As a boy, he and his friends would get up early to walk to Sammy’s Beach to hunt for ducks and would make it back in time for school.  Along with Albert C. Lester, Clarence Bennett, Nathan Cullum, Jed Brown, Vance Brown, and Dave Baker, he started The Maidstone Gun Club and later The Bonac Gun Club with Booty Card, Shep Frood, Derry Miller, Bob Elley, Berkley Bennett, George Rosen, and Matt Decelle.

Like many young men of his day, Rocky left school early to attend the Coast Guard Academy.  He served in the Mer-chant Marines during W.W. II and in the Navy during the Korean War.  Upon his return to East Hampton he married Joan Hagen Anderson on November 26, 1956, a descendant of the Fithian family, who predeceased him. Together they built their house on Cedar Street where they raised their 4 children, Florence Fithian Stone, Robert Edward “Rocky” Stone Jr., Marian Anderson Stone McMahon, and Nancy Gibson Stone Rowan.  He took pride in his family, who meant the world to him.  Besides his 4 children, he is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.  He is predeceased by 4 siblings, Joseph H. Stone Jr., Evelyn Stone Conrad, Dorothy Stone Edwards and Clifford Stone.

A graveside service with military honors was held at the Cedar Lawn Cemetery Monday, November 26. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested donations be made to East End Hospice.
