Coaches Are Beguiled

After the cheerleaders-in-training, pompoms in hand, had chanted, “We are proud of you, yes, we are proud of you!” Gary Stanis, who coaches East Hampton’s 9-year-old Police Athletic League football team, told the young champions Sunday morning, following their 32-6 win over Hampton Bays, “You guys have now started East Hampton’s winning tradition, just like they’ve got at William Floyd. It starts here. More will be demanded of you next year, and the year after that. Every year you’ll step up, all the way through.”

A Good Way to End Girls Swim Season
East Hampton could well be a powerhouse

When he gathered around him the seven swimmers who had qualified to compete in the county girls meet at Suffolk Community College-Brentwood Saturday afternoon, Tom Cohill, their coach, talked briefly with each of them about “the little things” that would help give them an edge.

Jarred Bowe to Play Division I Lacrosse at Delaware

It was after the East Hampton High School boys basketball team lost to John Glenn in the second round of the Class A playoffs two years ago when Zach Brenneman, then a senior, suggested to his sophomore teammate Jarred Bowe that he come out for lacrosse in the spring.

Wood Tapped for Honor
Howard Wood, the coach of the East Hampton High School girls basketball team, was recently selected as one of the University of Tennessee’s top 56 basketball players of all time. The program is celebrating its 100th anniversary this season. A reception will be held Feb. 13 and Feb. 14, when the program’s All-Century team will be announced.

Cyclocross Series Finale

The last events in the North American cyclocross trophy series, the 2008 Whitmore’s Landscaping Super Cross Cup, with a total purse of around $25,000, are to be held this weekend at the Southampton Recreation Center.
