East Hampton Village police said Saturday that a 14-year-old girl whose name has not been released died after she was stuck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle on the Pantigo Road section of Montauk Highway.
Police said that the accident happened at about 1:25 p.m. at the intersection of Gay Lane. The girl was trapped under the westbound Ford sport utility vehicle, which was apparently lifted or moved by "six to eight good Samaritans" to free her, police said. They did not say whether she had been wearing a helmet.
The girl was taken by East Hampton Village ambulance to East Hampton Airport, then by Suffolk police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, where a medical team was unable to save her.
The Gay Lane intersection is just east of the village shopping area. Nearby is a busy CVS drug store, Methodist Church, and a post office. Traffic was diverted from the area while the accident was under investigation.
The 73-year-old female driver of the vehicle involved, who police did not immediately identify, was not injured. Police impounded her vehicle for a standard safety inspection.
Police asked that any witnesses who have not already been interviewed about the accident phone them at 324-0777.
