350th Anniversary Celebration

NAUTICAL HIDE AND SEEK: PROHIBITION DAYS
The most thankless job ever assigned the Coast Guard was the duty, from Jan. 17, 1920, to Dec. 5, 1933, of enforcing the 18th Amendment. The service was blamed on all sides. It was criticized for its methods in chasing the rumrunners, and blamed when it let them slip past. Worse still, some of the lawbreakers refused to take it seriously, in its new role. For a service with a long and honorable history, this was galling.
